Beyond Repair: Theft, Return, and Justice in the Talmud

If you steal something, the Talmud says you have to return it. But what if you built wealth from what you stole – what if an entire building or legacy or nation was constructed on stolen goods – what does repair look like then? Does it stop at the looted items, or are the structures built from them implicated? In this workshop, we’ll put our rabbinic ancestors in conversation with modern Black and Indigenous thinkers to answer these questions – and we’ll see if the Talmudic case of a “stolen beam” can inform our work on reparations, colonialism, and more.
