“The unspeakable violence currently unfolding in Gaza is confronting the Jewish community with the most critical moral challenge of our lifetime.” Beyt Tikkun has taken a strong moral stance both opposing the horrific attack on October 7th and the genocidal violence inflicted on the Palestinians since, both in Gaza and the West Bank. We wrote and circulated a statement that gathered over 7000 signatures, we have held grieving circles, educational events, and more. We are a Synagogue for Ceasefire, and Rabbi Cat is a member of Rabbis4Ceasefire. She has also joined Interfaith actions as well as Jewish-led actions calling for a ceasefire. In addition, our Shabbat services and Torah studies both uplift the awe, wonder, and radical amazement of the universe and draw lessons and insights from our ancient teachings that allow us to critically engage with this moral challenge.
As we continue on this journey, we are planning upcoming events to deepen our understanding and inspire action. The first event will be a Members Only event on Sunday, Feb. 25th – 11am-1pm PT. At that event, we will discuss a statement written by Tzedek Chicago, a congregation that has taken a stance as an anti-Zionist congregation. Their statement challenges congregations to challenge the political project of Zionism. To read the statement, click here.
At this members only event, we will discuss this statement and explore how we feel and what, if any, statement we would want to release as a community.
If you are interested in contributing to and being a part of this initial conversation, and are not a member of Beyt Tikkun, you are invited to join as a member and participate in what promises to be a rich and multifaceted conversation. You can click here to join or call or email Alden at acohen.tikkun@gmail.com or 510-644-1200 for help. Once you join as a member, you will be sent a link to register for this event.
After this initial exploration, we will then hold larger community-wide educational opportunities, for both members and non-members, that will include watching videos, movies, and book discussions.
