SUMMARY:Havdalah with Jews On Ohlone Land
DESCRIPTION:Join Beyt Tikkun and Jews on Ohlone Land  (JOOL) for a special Havdalah ceremony at the sacred West Berkeley Shellmound—now officially being returned to Indigenous stewardship. \n📅 Date: Saturday\, August 30th⏰ Time: Gather at 8:10pm; Ritual at 8:20pm 📍 Location: West Berkeley Shellmound: 1920 Fourth Street\, Huichin (Berkeley\, CA)✅ Cost: Free; No registration necessary – Just show up! \nAccessibility: We will gather outside; Wheelchair Accessible; Masks Optional  \nIn March 2024\, the City of Berkeley announced that the land at 1920 Fourth Street will be transferred to the Sogorea Te’ Land Trust on behalf of the Confederated Villages of Lisjan Nation-  righting a historic wrong and rematriating the site to its original caretakers\, the Ohlone people. \nThough this is a major victory\, the cultural center and gathering space have not yet been built. At the invitation of Corrina Gould\, spokesperson for the Confederated Villages of Lisjan\, JOOL began celebrating Havdalah at the West Berkeley Shellmound in the summer of 2021. JOOL continues to bring people to the site to mark sacred time\, share its powerful story\, and invite community members to support Sogorea Te’ in this new chapter of healing and restoration. \nTogether\, we’ll close Shabbat with ritual and reflection\, learn about the ongoing vision for the West Berkeley Shellmound\, and explore ways to stay engaged\, including supporting Sogorea Te’ Land Trust. \nQuestions or accessibility needs? Please reach out to marissa@beyttikkun.org—we’d love to help make this space as welcoming and inclusive as possible. We look forward to gathering and connecting with you 💫

SUMMARY:Weekend Retreat: Softening Our Hearts\, Building Resilience\, Holding Grief\, Cultivating Joy
DESCRIPTION:A WEEKEND RETREAT FOR ACTIVISTSCo-sponsored by American Friends Service CommitteeDates: Friday\, August 8th – Sunday\, August 10thLocation: Quaker Center\, Ben Lomond\, CACost: Tiered Pricing from $50-$500 \nBuddhist teacher and activist Arinna Weisman and Jewish Renewal Rabbi and activist Cat Zavis will lead us in this special weekend retreat for activists and their allies working for an end to the genocide and for justice in Palestine. We will integrate Buddhist and Jewish practices including\, mindfulness\, meditation\, prayers\, chants\, and teachings\, and incorporate some Shabbat rituals and practices.     \nIt is a dedicated time to go within\, call upon and regenerate the beautiful heart qualities—such as radical compassion\, inner peace\, and unlimited kindness—to strengthen our capacity to hold our immense grief and sorrow\, release obstructions of the heart such as fear\, hatred or shame\, and alchemize our anger. This will strengthen us to allow continued and sustainable activism (or “sumud” as Palestinians say) as a form of sacred action for justice\, dignity\, and freedom.     \nWe do not have to do this alone! After so many months of grieving\, disbelief\, and urgent organizing\, we can come together to resource and heal\, rebalance and strengthen\, and allow the blessing of our collective energy to root and deepen the qualities of faith\, joy\, and love. There will be time for group sharings and questions and answers. A majority of this retreat will be silent. \nCOVID POLICYMasking (KN94/N95) is required while indoors unless you have a medical reason not to mask. We encourage you to test before attending the retreat. Please don’t attend if you have any symptoms. \nACCESSIBILITYBen Lomond Retreat Center has ADA compliant rooms and the site is ADA accessible. Please indicate any additional access needs on a post registration google survey you will be sent.    \nPRICING & CANCELATIONThe cost of putting on this retreat is $6\,000. We have tiered pricing in order to make this retreat accessible. Cancellation fee is $20.00 if you cancel before Monday\, July 28th. Cancellation anytime after Sunday\, July 27th is non-refundable. \nIn the Buddhist tradition\, the teachings are considered priceless and therefore offered freely by the teachers. In return\, those who appreciate them and would like them to continue will be given an opportunity to support the teachers through dana (generosity) at the end of the retreat. \nFUNDRAISINGIn order to make this retreat widely accessible\, we are raising funds beyond ticket costs. Our goal is to raise $5\,000. If you are unable to attend\, but would like to support our effort\, donate here.  \nIf you have any questions\, please email either Mica (beeingmaya@gmail.com) or Marge (margesussman@comcast.net) \n**Registration is now open for the Daylong Retreat on July 26th in Oakland California. You can learn more and register here.**

Please bring a camping chair if sitting on the ground or standing for 1.5 hours isn’t accessible for you. 💻 Online: Register here for Tisha B’av Online Ritual \nPublic Fast for Gaza on Tish’a B’Av: Join Rabbis for Ceasefire\, JVP-Bay Area\, If Not Now\, Beyt Tikkun and Shomeret Shalom\, and JSWANA Bay for a public grief ritual. \nTisha B’Av is a Jewish day of mourning that marks tragedies throughout Jewish history\, beginning with the destruction of the first and second temples. We meet this year’s Tisha B’Av in a moment of unthinkable tragedy–as we witness nearly two years of a genocide in Gaza and the Israeli government’s campaign of starving the Palestinian people in Gaza.  \nIn many Jewish communities it is traditional to fast on Tisha b’Av and in times of great peril. On Tisha b’Av we also read Eicha\, the Book of Lamentations. Rituals such as kriya\, the tearing of cloth in mourning\, is another psycho-spiritual technology of our tradition that we will draw open this year. In the face of the unfathomable ongoing genocide and starvation in Gaza\, we will use the power of Jewish tradition to publicly express our grief and invite our community to action\, to stop the genocide and starvation of the people of Gaza. \nAll are invited to participate\, regardless of your religious identity and relationship to Judaism. \nWe invite all attending to learn these songs\, which we’ll be singing during the ritual. We will have printed song sheets available with Hebrew and English lyrics: Oseh Shalom\, Turkish melody\, setting by Rinat Abastado and  Ayeka\, by Aly Halpert   \nMasks will be required unless you are medically unable.

SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat: Softening Our Hearts\, Building Resilience\, Holding Grief\, Cultivating Joy
DESCRIPTION:A DAYLONG RETREAT FOR ACTIVISTSCo-sponsored by American Friends Service CommitteeDate: Saturday\, July 26th\, 9:15am-5:30pmLocation: East Bay Meditation CenterCost: Tiered Pricing from $10-$50 \nBuddhist teacher and activist Arinna Weisman and Jewish Renewal Rabbi and activist Cat Zavis will lead this unique one-day retreat. This is a Dharma and Jewish Shabbat centered day for activists and their allies working for an end to the genocide and for justice in Palestine. We will integrate Buddhist and Jewish practices\, including mindfulness\, meditation\, prayers\, chants\, and teachings. There will be time for group sharings and questions\, and answers. \nLUNCHLunch is not provided. Please bring lunch with you (there will be access to a kitchen with a refrigerator) or plan to purchase lunch at a local shop. \nACCESSIBILITYThe East Bay Meditation Center is ADA compliant.. It is also a scent free / fragrance free space. Please indicate any additional access needs on a post registration google survey you will be sent.   \nCOVID POLICYMasking (KN94/N95) is required while indoors unless you have a medical reason not to mask. We encourage you to test before attending the retreat. Please don’t attend if you have any symptoms. \nPRICING & CANCELATIONThe cost of putting on this retreat is $18/person. We have tiered pricing in order to make this retreat accessible. Registration is non-refundable. \nIf you have any questions or need more support to join us\, please email either Mica (beeingmaya@gmail.com) or Marge (margesussman@comcast.net). \n**There will also be a weekend long retreat August 8th through August 10th. Learn more and register here.**

We will keep the room open so folks can connect with each other after the service. \nA peek into Torah study with us and the parsha reading this week: \nIn this week’s parsha\, God tells Moses to send 12 scouts to survey the land. Moses shares God’s instructions. May God’s message have been misunderstood? The scouts come back with mixed reports. Most are terrified of what they see–the people are giants and we are mere grasshoppers. Two\, Joshua and Caleb\, reassure the people that the land is filled with abundance and the people aren’t so immense. What’s going on? Is this the moment when the former Israelite slaves prove to God that they lack the courage to enter the Promised Land\, or are they are war resisters? Is their response one of surplus powerlessness or a response to a higher ethos?  \nHow does this story in this parsha play out today? And can we imagine a different reality? Can this parsha help us imagine a different way of seeing and engaging with the land and people who inhabit it?  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Accessibility: \n\nMasking optional \nAir filter provided; windows can be opened on request.\nNot wheelchair accessible—4 steps into the home\, 4 to the backyard.\nSeating includes couches\, chairs\, and floor pillows.\nServices may be held outdoors (weather permitting); please dress accordingly.\nPlease avoid scented products.\nNo shoes indoors\, if possible.\nIndoor and outdoor space available for eating.\nA cat lives in the home. We will gather as people of diverse faiths\, cultures\, and communities who believe in the sacredness of life\, dignity\, and shared well-being. \nWe are organizing this pilgrimage because the violence funded by U.S. tax dollars in Gaza is not separate from the violence our communities experience here — through systems of incarceration\, family separation\, displacement\, and criminalization that target immigrants\, Indigenous people\, unsheltered neighbors\, trans and BIPOC communities. \n \nTo Join:\n\nRegister here: https://www.im4humanintegrity.org/2025/04/right-of-return-pilgrimage/\nWe have created a Signal Group (for iPhone or Android phones)  to communicate location and other details on the day of the event : -You can join our Signal group here: https://shorturl.at/q8Uij-If you need support getting started with the Signal\, please see this article: https://shorturl.at/IUQH9-If you do not want to join the signal group\, no worries\, you can meet us at the location above at 4:00pm on Sunday\, June 8.

SUMMARY:Shabbat Service & Torah Study | Nasso
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat Services and & Torah Study: NassoSaturday\,  June 7thEmeryville\, CA & online9:30am Shabbat service // 10:30am Torah study \nYou can join us either in person or on Zoom for Shabbat services and/or Torah study. If you are in the Bay Area\, we’d love to have you join us in person. After Torah study\, we enjoy a vegetarian potluck meal together and have an opportunity to deepen our connection with one another. If you are able\, please bring a vegetarian dish to share with others. For those joining us online\, we invite you to also bring food to eat after the service. We will keep the room open so folks can connect with each other after the service. \nTorah Study on Parshat Nasso: Every burden matters. Every voice counts. \nJoin us this Shabbat as we dive into Parshat Nasso. At first glance\, some parts of this parsha might feel distant—or even troubling—from our modern sensibilities. But what if these ancient words still speak powerfully to the challenges of building a just and united community today? \nTogether\, we’ll explore questions like: \n\nWhat does Nasso teach us about building a society where every person has a role and a voice?\nHow do we confront and wrestle with texts that feel uncomfortable—like the sotah ritual—and still find meaning?\nWhat can this parsha reveal about the sacred burdens we carry\, and the responsibilities we share in our communities?\nIf we were writing a book today on how to build a nation of purpose\, justice\, and belonging—what chapters might we borrow from Nasso? What would we change? \n\nWhether you’re a regular Torah learner or just curious to explore deeper questions of community\, justice\, and identity\, this is a space to learn\, reflect\, and grow together. \nCome with your questions. Leave with deeper connection. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Access Information \n\nLocation: Rabbi Cat’s home in Oakland\, about 0.5 miles from MacArthur BART Station. We will keep the room open so folks can connect with each other after the service. \nA peek into Torah study with us and the parsha reading this week \nThis week’s parsha\, Emor\, pulls no punches. It presents tough questions—some even offensive on first reading. \n\nWho is “worthy” enough to offer sacrifices? And who decides?\nWhat does it truly mean to not desecrate the name of God? Is it just about not swearing—or something far deeper?\nAnd how do we reconcile the Torah’s mandate—“one law for citizen and stranger alike”—with the reality of the Israeli modern state that violates this principle? Can a state call itself Jewish while embracing systemic inequality?\n\nThese aren’t easy questions. But they’re essential ones. Join us as we wrestle honestly with our tradition and what it demands of us today. \nLet’s lean into the discomfort. That’s where transformation begins. We hope you can join us for these rich and thought-provoking discussions. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Access Information \n\nLocation: Rabbi Cat’s home in Oakland\, about 0.5 miles from MacArthur BART Station.
