We will keep the room open so folks can connect with each other after the service. \nA peek into Torah study with us and the parsha reading this week: \nIn this week’s parsha\, God tells Moses to send 12 scouts to survey the land. Moses shares God’s instructions. May God’s message have been misunderstood? The scouts come back with mixed reports. Most are terrified of what they see–the people are giants and we are mere grasshoppers. Two\, Joshua and Caleb\, reassure the people that the land is filled with abundance and the people aren’t so immense. What’s going on? Is this the moment when the former Israelite slaves prove to God that they lack the courage to enter the Promised Land\, or are they are war resisters? Is their response one of surplus powerlessness or a response to a higher ethos?  \nHow does this story in this parsha play out today? And can we imagine a different reality? Can this parsha help us imagine a different way of seeing and engaging with the land and people who inhabit it?  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Accessibility: \n\nMasking optional \nAir filter provided; windows can be opened on request.\nNot wheelchair accessible—4 steps into the home\, 4 to the backyard.\nSeating includes couches\, chairs\, and floor pillows.\nServices may be held outdoors (weather permitting); please dress accordingly.\nPlease avoid scented products.\nNo shoes indoors\, if possible.\nIndoor and outdoor space available for eating.\nA cat lives in the home. SUMMARY:Shabbat Service & Torah Study | Nasso
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat Services and & Torah Study: NassoSaturday\,  June 7thEmeryville\, CA & online9:30am Shabbat service // 10:30am Torah study \nYou can join us either in person or on Zoom for Shabbat services and/or Torah study. Every voice counts. \nJoin us this Shabbat as we dive into Parshat Nasso. At first glance\, some parts of this parsha might feel distant—or even troubling—from our modern sensibilities. But what if these ancient words still speak powerfully to the challenges of building a just and united community today? \nTogether\, we’ll explore questions like: \n\nWhat does Nasso teach us about building a society where every person has a role and a voice?\nHow do we confront and wrestle with texts that feel uncomfortable—like the sotah ritual—and still find meaning?\nWhat can this parsha reveal about the sacred burdens we carry\, and the responsibilities we share in our communities?\nIf we were writing a book today on how to build a nation of purpose\, justice\, and belonging—what chapters might we borrow from Nasso? What would we change? \n\nWhether you’re a regular Torah learner or just curious to explore deeper questions of community\, justice\, and identity\, this is a space to learn\, reflect\, and grow together. \nCome with your questions. Leave with deeper connection. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Access Information \n\nLocation: Rabbi Cat’s home in Oakland\, about 0.5 miles from MacArthur BART Station. DESCRIPTION:Shabbat Services and & Torah Study: EmorSaturday\,  May 17thEmeryville\, CA & online9:30am Shabbat service // 10:30am Torah study \nYou can join us either in person or on Zoom for Shabbat services and/or Torah study. If you are in the Bay Area\, we’d love to have you join us in person. If you are able\, please bring a vegetarian dish to share with others. For those joining us online\, we invite you to also bring food to eat after the service. We will keep the room open so folks can connect with each other after the service. \nA peek into Torah study with us and the parsha reading this week \nThis week’s parsha\, Emor\, pulls no punches. It presents tough questions—some even offensive on first reading. \n\nWho is “worthy” enough to offer sacrifices? And who decides?\nWhat does it truly mean to not desecrate the name of God? Is it just about not swearing—or something far deeper?\nAnd how do we reconcile the Torah’s mandate—“one law for citizen and stranger alike”—with the reality of the Israeli modern state that violates this principle? Can a state call itself Jewish while embracing systemic inequality?\n\nThese aren’t easy questions. But they’re essential ones. Join us as we wrestle honestly with our tradition and what it demands of us today. \nLet’s lean into the discomfort. That’s where transformation begins. We hope you can join us for these rich and thought-provoking discussions. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Access Information \n\nLocation: Rabbi Cat’s home in Oakland\, about 0.5 miles from MacArthur BART Station. Address will be provided once you register. \nAccessibility: There are 4 steps to enter the house and 4 steps to the backyard (if people choose to go there.) The bathroom is not wheelchair accessible. There are couches\, chairs\, and floor pillows for seating. Please try to be scent-free. A retriever/labrador dog lives in the home but will not be present. The Hebrew word for sacrifice or offerings means to “draw close” – meaning to draw close to the Divine. We are living in a time where we are desecrating the Divine through inhumane acts of shocking proportions. Are there offerings or sacrifices we can or should make to help draw us closer to the Divine to bring forth more divinity in our world? \nWe hope you can join us for these rich and thought-provoking discussions. \n \nAccess Information \n\nLocation: Rabbi Cat’s home in Oakland\, about 0.5 miles from MacArthur BART Station. SUMMARY:Shabbat Service & Torah Study | Ki Tisa
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat Services and & Torah Study: Parsha Ki Tisa\nSaturday\, March 15th\nEmeryville\, CA & online\n9:30am Shabbat service // 10:30am Torah study\nRegister Here \nYou can join us either in person or on Zoom for Shabbat services and/or Torah study. If you are in the Bay Area\, we’d love to have you join us in person. We will keep the room open so folks can connect with each other after the service. \nA peek into Torah study with us and the parsha this week  \nThis week\, we will discuss the Torah parshat Ki Tisa. In this parsha\, the Israelites build the Golden Calf. We will explore: \n\nWhy the people may have wanted or needed an idol.\nWhat they hoped it would replace or how it would serve them.\nWhether there are any similarities today.\n\nWe will also discuss Purim and the Book of Esther\, which is read during Purim\, taking place this week on March 13th-14th. \nPurim is traditionally a time of joy and celebration. We are taught that Purim reveals how the boundaries between good and evil are blurred and confusing—a reminder that we too can become the oppressor. \nIn the Book of Esther\, particularly the often-omitted last chapter\, Esther orders the genocide of an entire people\, believing that murdering the other is the only way to save the Jews. This raises deep and relevant questions for today. \nSome Israelis attack Palestinians during Purim\, believing that the mandate to wipe out the other to protect Jews is justified both biblically and ethically. \nIn our discussion\, we will explore: \n\nThe meaning of this story.\nWhether we should read the Book of Esther or celebrate Purim.\nAnd more.\n\nWe hope you can join us for these rich and thought-provoking discussions. \n\n \nAccess Information \n\nLocation: Rabbi Cat’s home in Oakland\, about 0.5 miles from MacArthur BART Station. SUMMARY:Shabbat services and Torah study | Mishpatim
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat Services and & Torah Study: Mishpatim \nSaturday\, February 22nd \nEmeryville\, CA & online \n9:30am Shabbat service // 10:30am Torah study  \nRegister Here \nYou can join us either in person or on Zoom for Shabbat services and Torah study. If you are in the Bay Area\, we’d love to have you join us in person. After Torah study\, we enjoy a vegetarian potluck meal together and have an opportunity to deepen our connection with one another. If you are able\, please bring a vegetarian dish to share with others.   \nTo obtain the Zoom link to join us online or the address where we meet in person (centrally located in Emeryville\, only a short walk from the MacArthur Bart Station)\, please register here. Feel free to invite others as well by forwarding this email or link.  \nWe begin our Shabbat service at 9:30am PT with meaningful prayers\, balancing the awe of being alive with the call in our tradition for radical transformation of our world. \nThen we turn to our Torah study at 10:30am PT. This week we begin reading the book of Exodus\, the foundational text of liberation theology\, the seeds of which were planted in the book of Genesis. This parsha once again begins with naming all the sons of Israel (i.e.\, Jacob) who came to Egypt. The Israelites\, we are told\, are fertile and multiple in the land. Pharaoh expresses fear that they will become stronger than the Egyptians and join in solidarity with others and rise from the land. \nThe fear of the power of refugees to align with other oppressed and vulnerable peoples to challenge empire has a long history. Pharaoh\, like modern tyrants today\, chooses to respond to their presence and strength by stoking fear in the Egyptians and imposing slave masters over them to increase their oppression. We will reflect on the similarities in our Torah to what we can expect under a Trump administration and how Israel has and continues to respond to and treat Palestinians today. \nRegistration is FREE for both Zoom and in person participation. \nClick here to register \nWe’d love to have you join us!  \n9:30 am Pacific Time (12:30 pm Eastern Time)Shabbat morning prayers and celebration of the universe \n10:30 am Pacific Time (1:30 pm Eastern Time)Torah Study | Mishpatim Exodus 21:1–24:18 \n12:15 pm Pacific Time (3:15 pm Eastern Time)Kaddish\, Kiddush\, and vegetarian potluck for those able to join us in person! \n*Please save this link for information on upcoming Torah Study and Special Events \nYou can watch Rabbi Cat’s musings from last week and Beyt Tikkun’s Torah Study from the previous week \n | Rabbi Cat’s Musings on parshat Yitro\n | Torah study on parshat Beshalach\nShabbat Services and Torah Study are held at Rabbi Cat’s home\, address will be provided once you register. SUMMARY:Tu B’Shvat Celebration: Shabbat\, Torah Study\, and Environmental Seder
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, Feb. 8th at 9:30am\, in addition to our regular Shabbat and Torah Study\, we will be hosting our special Tu B’shvat Seder – the Jewish environmental holiday. We will begin with our morning celebration of the universe\, study Torah\, and then have a celebratory environmental seder. All with great teachings and music led by Rabbi Cat Zavis and Dr. Ami Goodman.  \nYou can join us either in person or on Zoom for Shabbat services and Torah study. If you are in the Bay Area\, we’d love to have you join us in person. \nTo obtain the Zoom link to join us online or the address where we meet in person (centrally located in Emeryville\, only a short walk from the MacArthur Bart Station) \nPlease register here. \nFeel free to invite others as well by forwarding this email or link. \nWe will use the Beyt Tikkun Tu B’shvat mahzor and follow the Chasidic path\, coupled with the wisdom of tikkun olam. \nThe seder will involve enjoying various fruits\, helping us connect with the beauty and bounty of our planet. If you join us on Zoom\, we encourage you to get some of the relevant fruit and grape juice or wine (some red and white) so you can participate fully in the experience. If you join us in person\, we will provide the fruits and juice. The tradition is to move from less permeable fruit to more permeable. All you need is one fruit for each of the following stages:  \n\nFirst\, those with tough shells and soft edible inside (e.g.\, walnuts\, coconuts\, pomegranates\, or melons). \nSecond\, fruit with a soft outside but hard inside (e.g.\, peaches\, dates\, apricots\, olives\, cherries\, dates\, plums\, etc.). \nThird\, fruit that is soft both on the outside and the inside (e.g.\, strawberries\, figs\, blueberries\, pears\, grapes\, apples\, etc.). \nIn the 4th stage\, we will visualize a higher level of connection to the earth and the cosmos (no fruit needed!)\n\nYou only need one fruit for each of these stages. If you don’t get them\, then just imagine them when we get to each stage.  \nAnd at each stage we also drink some grape juice or wine – ideally you’ll have white grape juice or wine and red wine or grape juice. Come and enjoy!   \n9:30 am PST:  Shabbat celebration of the universe \n10:30 am PST:  Torah study: Beshalach – God continues to harden Pharaoh’s heart and sends Pharaoh and his army after the Hebrews. Exodus 13:17 (sefaria.org)  \n11:30 to 12:30 pm PST  – Tu B’Shvat Environmental Seder.   \nYou are invited to all or any segment you want. \nHope to see you there! \nRabbi Cat Zavis & the Beyt Tikkun Team \nPlease register here.\nShabbat Services and Torah Study are held at Rabbi Cat’s home\, address will be provided once you register.
